Shooting

Young players can tend to create bad habits when shooting the puck. Make sure that when you shoot the puck you are transferring your weight to the correct leg. 90% of all shots taken are while we are in motion. Make sure you practice shooting the puck both stationary as well as while skating. If you are a right handed player you need to shift your weight from your right leg through to our left leg. If you are a left handed player our weight needs to shift from our left to right leg.

Shooting 25 or 30 pucks right before practice will drastically increase shot strength and accuracy.

Strength Training: Manual Squats

Manual Squats are one of the most effective exercises that a young hockey player can perform.
No weights are necessary. Here is how to properly perform this exercise:

-Stand with legs slightly wider than shoulder width apart
-Hands can be placed either on hips or place arms straight out.
-Bend legs down until knees are slightly higher than 90-degree angle.
-Make sure you try to sit back on your heels as we do not want our knees to be extended out over of our toes.
-Pause for a half second and return to starting position.
-Perform 20 reps at a time. Rest for 2 minutes and repeat for a total of 5 sets.
-100 Manual Squats a day will increase strength in your legs and is perfect for a young athlete.
